Shield. The mustang, in the style of traditional Pacific Northwest art, embodies the ships namesake as a bold and adventurous creature that captures the spirit of the wild and great outdoors, who is prepared for action and ready to work. The dancette partition of the shield recalls the mountains and frames the clear night sky. The Big Dipper constellation and Polaris reinforce the open sky theme and recall the flag of Alaska to denote where the ship is stationed. Additionally, the solitary gold star indicates that the ship is part of the Island-class Coast Guard cutters and is representative of Mustang Island, a barrier island off the coast of Texas and for which the ship is named.
Crest. The life preserver emphasizes the search and rescue operations performed by the crew. The demi-trident conveys the ships various missions including living marine resource enforcement, homeland, port, waterway, and coastal security, and other law enforcement. The Coast Guard officer sword and enlisted cutlass pay tribute to the command and crew, representing authority, professionalism and unity in the accomplishment of their mission.
Motto. The motto, ALASKAS WORKHORSE, underscores the diligent and devoted duty put forth by the crew of the MUSTANG as they spend roughly 150 days at sea each year. The MUSTANG is the only Coast Guard unit in Seward and the furthest northwest of any ship in the Island class.
Seal. The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a white disk, enclosed by a dark blue border, edged in gold rope, and inscribed USCGC MUSTANG above and WPB 1310 below, all white.
